Staff LYS is organized, staffed and directed by young professionals and college students who volunteer their time every summer. Each staff member has participated in LYS as a student delegate and therefore understands the inner workings of the program. The staff is young, positive, and progressive and can easily identify with the hopes, feelings and trends of Louisiana's youth. Each year at least 5 new members are asked to join the staff, based on a set of criteria including participation at LYS and commitment to the sustainability of LYS. After receiving input from current staff, the Program Director consults with others as required and makes a recommendation to the Executive Committee, based on the written criteria set out. The Program Director has the responsibility to ensure that staff is representative of the LYS delegation from the standpoint of high school affiliation, geographical composition, gender, ethnicity, personality style and other diversity components. The Program Director outlines specific responsibilities for staff both at LYS and during the year. If the staff member fulfills their responsibility, they are asked back for the next year until they reach "% Year Club". After reaching this milestone, the Program Director has the discretion to ask back staff but must meet the other requirements set out earlier, such as asking back new staff each year and ensuring broad representation.
Staff represent the hands, heart and soul of the LYS experience the third week in July. Staff have the responsibility to deliver a quality LYS Program to the 200 high school students attending LYS.
